What are flugelhau and streithau?

Postby Mike_McGurk » Tue Mar 21, 2006 7:53 pm

I've seen a few words (well a bit more than a few, but I won't bother with them now ) on the main page and on the forum, which I either don't know the meaning of or don't understand. Here they are:
Flugelhau
Streithau
Kurtzhau
Krawthacke
Vater Streich
Noterczunge
If somebody could enlighten me as to their nature (i.e. exactly how, whence and when they are performed), that would be very helpful.
Thank you.

Hello,

I can tell my opinion about a few of the strikes.

Kurtzhau

You start a krumphau, and before you would hit, you pull back the tip of the sword to your left side and do an unterhau from the left. (meyer)

Vater Streich
= Zornhau (meyer)

Noterczunge
quick stabbing motions above and under the hilt of the enemy, done very fast, an opening techniqe but can end in hitting your adversary. (hanko)

The rest I don't know <img src="/forum/images/icons/wink.gif" alt="" />

I can only offer my opinion on some of the strikes from the Meyer longsword perspective.

Flugelhau: A hanging point cut often to the hands, elbows, forearms.

Kurtzhau: a device from the hanging guard, us Umschlagen/Umschnappen (striking around and winden striking)
The Kurtzhau is a short edge strike with crossed hands that is done with a sidestep from hangin point parry.

If I recall correctly, this one translates as "adder's tongue" because your sword is flicking in and out like the tongue of a snake. I love descriptive terminology like that. I think Krawthacke means "garden hoe" and refers to quick, short chopping motions from the half arm and wrist. Both are harassing techniques to bait somebody into making a mistake.
