Recommended Protective Gear for Rapier Training

Postby Rod-Thornton » Tue Apr 04, 2006 6:22 pm

Hullo:

As we start to also explore some rapier fencing in earnest, I've had occassion to take two rather disagreeable pokes into the throat area. Each of these managed to slide up under the curtain of my three-weapon mask and were total game-stoppers. -Normally the hits aren't a problem, but this happening more than once could be.

Concerned over a crushed windpipe, I am wondering what other folks are using to prevent this. Anyone making a custom mask with rigid throat protection? Any advice?

Normally during longsword we've not had an issue. Too, the regular button-sized bruises across the body after a "rapier-day" ain't too bad...until they land on the throat.

hey Rod we have expirenced the same thing as well, we are trying to come up with a solution as well.....so far not real sure.

I have tried some of the throat guards we use for simunitions training in Law Enforcemnet simulations, and while it covers well, it is not hard or thick enough to do much, so the search continues. I would also be interested in any ideas- Thanks, AP

Buy a decent gorget to wear with your mask. Heck with a measurement of your neck size I would be happy to make one out of steel or plastic for a price (private message me if interested). If you want a mask with built in solid neck protection, you would need one like I make.

Where could you get a plain jane gorget like the ones on the link above? $156 is a bit too steep for me!!<img src="/forum/images/icons/shocked.gif" alt="" />

I saw one on ebay for $20 (plus $10 shipping). Some nicer one for about $50.
