club collection. Thanks largely to the unprecedented effort of Houston member, Erich Wagner, we were able to select and obtain a fine specimen of a 16th century ring-hilted warsword with hand-and-a-half grip.
This weapon will be featured at upcoming ARMA events where those members contributing to the Club Sword Fund, for purchase of this and future pieces, will be permitted exclusive opportunity for handing of the weapon.
Rather than stare at a real; sword as a sterile object or inert artifact, the very point of our acquiring such specimens is to be able to give ours members a unique research experience as students of swordplay: the rare opportunity to conduct some degree of energetic practice (i.e., floryshes and tiprogressions) with a genuine historical blade.
The more ARMA members who donate $10, $20, or more to this effort, the easier
it will be to add further pieces to our club collection, giving everyone unprecedented hands-on access to an actual Renaissance sword. (For details on how members may be included in this contact Erich Wagner).
Once again, the ARMA has accomplished a first in historical fencing studies: the collective ownership of an authentic sword for purposes not merely of conservation or commerical reproduction but expanding knowledge of its historical function and use among martial artists.
Sincerely,
John C.
ARMA Director
