Polearm Question - Halberd, Pollaxe, Bill, or spear?

Postby Rod-Thornton » Thu Jun 21, 2007 7:02 am

Okay....Quick survey question for opinions wanted. I like the idea of adding a pole-arm to my growing collection of play toys and training tools.

Besides the simple wooden staff for training purposes, which one item would folks think most fun to add to the collection. (Economics dictate only acquiring one).... I'd like to p/up one "sharp" in the polearm side of things, but am unsure which would be best.
Spear? Halberd? Bill? Pollaxe?

I'm currently assembling harness since my study group focuses on that, and on the heels of acquiring a new Albion blunt, and the pending Int'l event, I really only can budget one "sharp" right now and while there is no logical justification for any one of them, it would be fun to add at least one.

Thoughts and opinions?

That is a hard choice. I guess it depends on what you want to do with it most (thrusting or cutting). I would get a spear just because it is so generic and can do it all depending on what kind of head you get. After that, I would get a bill for the awesome cutting ability.

I think this is a personal choice and you should probably go with your gut.

I typically find that if I'm honest with myself, I know what I want most of the time, I'm just letting my head get in the way and trying to figure out which "makes the most sense" or something like that. Realistically, I'd say that our hobby doesn't "make sense" in terms of useful skillset (in the modern world), advancing your career, etc. You do it because you enjoy it.

That being said, I'm partial to pollaxes. If I was getting a weapon to train in harness with, I'd definitely choose a pollaxe. I rather like the Arms & Armor Knightly Pollaxe, so that is probably what I'd get. Or, I'd get Erich McHugh to make me a custom piece, as I really love the halberd he did for Eric Nower shown on MyArmoury.

Why dont you just get the double ended hewing spear of death? because of the magical crystals embedded in its head it can transform into anything!

but really, I preffer poleaxes.
