new magazine

Postby Edwin_Stafford » Fri Aug 17, 2007 6:01 am

Don't know if this has been posted yet, but there's a magazine starting up called Western Martial Arts Illustrated. They've got the first two out. It looks good so far. http://www.wmaillustrated.com/index.htm.

I think it is a step in the right direction, and I hope it doesn't go horribly wrong with petty politics. I thought I wouldn't like the Victorian and Edwardian period martial arts articles, but then I realized that their inclusion clarified the history of european martial arts at and after the time that the sword arts atrophied and evolved into sport fencing.

It was also funny to see how widespread ARMA was compared to other groups.

Hmm... it appears that this magazine is basically a publication of the Chicago Swordplay Guild. I don't trust their interpretations. I think this is something where it's best to save your money.

Most of it is not interpretation...at least not the first issue, except for Tom Leoni's halberd article. His article was educational for me since I have really no knowledge of the halberd and its evolution. I didn't really look through the interpretive stuff since I really have no interest in halberd right now.

I think there are one or two people (who shall remain nameless) who they should have on their editorial board, but who they wouldn't work with in a thousand years with a gun to their head...or maybe the folks I'm thinking of said no. I ordered a year's subscription many months ago because I like the concept. I'm willing to give them a chance to see if it turns into something useful. Next year, if I'm not liking it I'll not renew. But the first issue was a decent beginning IMHO.

yeah unfortunatly, as much as i would love to open mindedly view this magazine i have my doubts. Its shame that we have these political issues in HEMA. It brings everyone down with it.

I would probably read it myself but with the usual reservations i have for anyone who values politics over truth or martial skills.
I make no ap0logies for that though , I have seen it too much in my life training martial arts and it never never benefits the art.
