Geoffroi de Charny (1300-56) was the younger nephew, a French knight who lived it, did it and wrote about it in his own book of chivalry:

The equipment of Geoffroi de Charny is a typical example of a French knight around 1356. We describe the outfit from top to bottom. Everything described is taken from the engraving presented in the biography of Geoffroi.

1. The head is protected by a helmet with a sparrow’s beak. This type of helmet was a relatively recent innovation that came from Italy. The helm itself was seen in the beginning of the 14th century, but the visor came at a later date. The peak of the helm is tipped back in the Italian style. The muzzle of the visor is very long, to divert most lance strikes to the sides. The lower edge of the visor is decorated with brass strip, a simple aesthetic device to show richness. The rivets holding the visor to the helm are also brass. The mail collar is attached via a leather band to vervelles on the helm to keep it from falling off. The edge of the mail collar is ornamented with a strip of gilded cloth to prevent the rings from rubbing the chin. Geoffroi’s helm has lots of holes along the edge to hold the seam of a cloth cap placed inside the helmet.
