Is the info in this video reliable?

Postby Grant Hall » Fri Sep 21, 2007 7:51 am

Greetings, I am having difficulty veiwing the videos here on the ARMA site (I have tried on 4 different computers and still can't veiw them), and so I have resorted to veiwing videos on YouTube, trying to stick to vids of ARMA members as much as is possible, however there is not much out there (that I can find).

Anyway, I came across this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUmHwNVyE7Y# it is part one in a series of basic moves and instructions, and I was wondering how accurate it is from the ARMA's P.O.V.

Also if anyone can link me to a site that houses the ARMA's vids as Windows Media Player files that would be great too!

Thanks in advance, God Bless!

Grant, since you asked:

I would say no. I do not think that is the way to properly understand the footwork of Kunst des Fechtens. It is not dynamic, it is like a sedate tai-chi exercise. That must be Jeff Tsay and his group Forte Swordplay:

http://forteswordplay.com/

You may notice that they probably interpret everything in KdF through the filter of Asian martial arts. Their PDF for footwork of springen is undynamic, again reminiscent of tai-chi soft & slow motion. Their AVI of Krump-Zorn seems like an out-of-range theatrical demonstration. They have another interpretive video for Mair’s Krumphau that some in ARMA who focus on Mair may not find agreeable:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid ... phau&hl=en

So over all, I would say their whole approach is not like what ARMA chooses to do.

If I am wrong in my assessment, then by all means, whosoever disagrees may tell me why.

Grant: I encourage you to focus on ARMA basics and to view ARMA videos. A really good free media player, that lets you view most videos, is called GOM Player. It even fetches codecs you may need from Web for you. You can find a download for it in Web.

Hmmm. That google video of the group is particularly... misleading. I understand the need to slow down a demonstration of a technique in order to properly display it's motions, but the manner in which they did it completely ignored the way a fight flows. For instance, in the middle of the technique, the gentleman on the left takes two distinct, slow steps, apparently in anticipation of an attack that may or may not have come. Also, I found the phrase "and slice through his head" rather amusing. I think these fellas might be confusing longsword with lightsaber.

Thankyou both for your replies, I downloaded the GOM Player but it still does not let me veiw the Videos from here on the ARMA site.

When I click the provided links my computer downloads the file or tries to read it (whatever it is doing when the World in the top right corner is turning) then it goes to a blank screen where I can here the videos playing (lots of grunts and the clashing of swords) but I can't see anything.

Does anyone know why I am having these problems (It has happened on 4 different computers now, so I think it might be the ARMA site but I'm not sure).

May God Bless you, and thanks in advance for any and all help!

Simply put, it's as wrong as it could be and bears no resemblance to proper longsword footwork IMO. My advice, delete that link from your desktops history and never look at it again. Work out the technical issues, then utilize the resources on the members web page. Remember that functional longsword footwork is simple, strong, and dynamic.
