Fencing mask?

Postby GaryGrzybek » Tue May 13, 2003 5:48 pm

I'm thinking about ordering a three weapons mask from Triplette. The one that has the removeable bib is about $80.

Any comments would be appreciated before I proceed

I have ordered about a thousand dollars worth of equipment through triplett. They are competent.

When you order, make sure you have the exact catalogue # of the item you want to buy. Also, make sure the operator checks that very instant as to wether the item is backlogged or not. I've recieved all my orders from them in a matter of days if the item is not backlogged. If it is backlogged, there is no telling how long it will take... weeks... months...

I have seen the helm in question as well. (three examples of same helm worn by two friends of mine, over the course of two years). It is average at best. The mask is strong, but the bib material will wear out within a year, and "flake" onto your face. Eventually degrading away into rags.

I would suggest a higher end mask. My Prier mask has lasted me 8 years with no problems. I think it was well worth the extra $75 or so in price.

Hope this helps.

If your badget allows you to buy top notch new equipment go for it, they're money well spended.
If, like me, you have tight budeget limits you might consider used items, my fencing mask is an old one used with the steel foils of long ago and it seems to work, anyway saving on practice weapons (self made wasters, padded swords etc.) makes more sense than saving on protections

Gary,

Check on e-bay first to save money. They are always on there. I picked mine up for $20.00.

Gary,

I just bought the mask you're looking at a couple of months ago. The bib itself is not removable; there is a bib liner that comes out which is made of fairly flimsy-looking (but soft and comfortable) material. I get a little annoyed when the edge of the liner rolls up under my chin, but other than that I'm pretty happy with it. The mask itself seems pretty sturdy. JC was gracious enough to dent test it for me (while I was wearing it, of course). Really it's better if you just keep your head out of the way. Make sure you order it in red.

Hi,

I like the idea of being able to remove to inner bib for washing since I sweat like a pig. If you feel it's worth the money then I don't mind spending a little extra cash.

I'll be sure not to let John have any head shots

Todd,

Do you know what brand it is?

Could you post a pic please?

Depending upon how much you sweat/use the mask, those stainless rivets that secure the bib/topstrap/backstrap will begin to rust after a while (I know because I also sweat like a pig when exercising). I was given the tip to put clear nail polish on the interior portion of these studs after my first mask's studs rusted (a top brand). I haven't had any problems yet with the second.
