There is no prescribed width for the "guard", just as there is no prescribed dagger. In the old days, they came in all shapes and sizes. Vadi is the only master to prescribe an "ideal" dagger, and he says that when you hold it in the reverse grip, the blade should not be longer than the length of your forearm. That is, the point should not project beyond your elbow.

You guys have fun in Columbus.

Even for the instruction portion I would strongly prefer everyone to bring either BCG's or industrial safety/painting goggles (available cheaply at any Lowes and providing full eye protection). For those on a budget, a 1/2" dowel rod (suitably sanded or padded) makes a perfectly adequate rondel simulator.

Jay,

it might be easier to just commision a helmet from me. I promise to put up a good fight if you ever decide to mug me for mine. Though I appreciate the implied compliment on my helmet. :)

Thanks for your comments on dagger lengths and the reference to Vadi, using a dagger the length of your forearm is something I have known for years, but it is nice to see a period reference for it.

I plan to have fun in Columbus, I hope everyone else does as well.

OK, we finally received confirmation for space for the 17-18th Ringen event---1pm-8pm Sat (RPAC 138 East and West combined) and 10am-4pm Sunday (200A in the new section--even bigger!). So, with that set, please give another thought to joining us here at our fine facilities here in Columbus---it will be a rollicking good time, ya fer sure!

cheers,
Keith, SA

right, so I saw that Andy is interested, and maybe some of the rest of the gang from Murray State; Nate and Nick also a maybe, and Eric chimed in. Of course Brian is the instructor. We have myself, Jaron, and several others from here in Cols. So I would like to know a current definite roll-call that will show please...

Okay, let's try this one again.

Sorry guys, but the doctor tells me I won't be taking part in the seminar this weekend. A little knee trouble.

Okay, actually, I'm having trouble walking right now.

This totally sucks, because the last Columbus seminar was awesome.

The workshop went wonderfully. We spent 2 full days learning striking, joint locks, throws, dagger and most imporportantly how to integrate their use together. Thanks for Brian Hunt for coming to Ohio to teach a very well researched and sourced class. Thanks to Andy and Justin for making the trip from Kentucky and our locals for their enthusiastic (and somewhat bruising) participation. :D

echoing Jaron, we had a great and educational time--and quite a total workout. I feel Brian has the complete makings of a future 2.0 NTP for Ringen to hone if JC and SFS's might consider approving such a project. I hope more people are working on this aspect of the art so that the organization becomes more comfortable with allowing more Ringen in general.

Thank you again Brian and all who attended and helped organize the event

I would like to thank the Columbus group for their fine hospitality and I was happy to see the amount of work and effort they put into their training. I had a great time sharing my personal understanding of Ringen and Dagger, I feel the class went very well though I did have more material prepared than we were able to finish. I would like to thank everyone who attended, it was great to meet and talk with each and everyone of you. As usual at something like this, there isn't enough time in the day to get to everything you would have liked to have.

I look forward to the day I get to go back to Columbus for another event.

P.S. I would like to thank Jay Vail for his dagger book which helped me quickly reference several techniques I know from other martial studies and quickly see where they are found in our studies, the guys in Poland for their great DVD on Ott's wrestling, and everyone else who has made it possible to quickly research a large amount of information on our art thanks to their hard work on translations, books, and articles.

Sounds like a great time and I am sorry I missed it. Totally agree that Jay's book and the Ott Wrestling DVD's put a lot of valuable information in one place. Thanx to both groups and individuals.

Working out with the Columbus group is always a great time, not only because the people are dedicated and well trained, but also because they have an incredible workout facility available to them.

Green with envy!!!

Justin and I are both grateful for having the opportunity to attend. We both learned lots of new things to use on our own group.

Thanks to Jaron and Keith for hosting our get together, and thanks to Brian for coming out and teaching.

I personally had a great time, and though not able to participate fully on the second day, i still have much to practice with. I also learned to be wary of Brian when he got that excited gleam in his eye when was about to cause one of us pain.
