Darkwood Armoury Longswords.

Postby Sam Nankivell » Tue Jan 08, 2008 3:22 pm

It seems that Darkwood Armoury makes longswords in addition to their line of single-handed swords. Since I am still in the market for a blunt longsword, how would those who have handled them rate them? If they are the same grind as a sidesword blade, I assume they are about that flexible.

I am no expert on longsword blades, but It seems that 1.25" is quite short for the width of a longsword, I wonder how this affects the handling.

Also, is it possible to get a handle longer than 7"? That seems rather short for a two handed handle.

Wow,

for not much more you could have a Meyer or a Liechtenauer from Albion. I would just save the extra cash and get that rather than pay that much for a sword you nothing about the handling charactoristics of.

all the best.

Hey what do you guys think of either Museum Replicas or these guys

Windless Steelcrafts? I've been thinking about getting a good sword, but I'm not really sure of the qualities of makers out there.. OR the reputations. If you could give me a heads up I'd appreciate it. If you have any ideas off hand, I like the bastard sword, the scimitar, and the Rapier.

Thanks,
James Foley

I am also considering the Liechtenhauer, but the Darkwood Longswords caught my eye because in addition to being slightly cheaper they are also customisable. Darkwood had made extremely good single-handed swords in the past, I was just wondering if their longswords were as good.

In addition to the ARMA forums, there is http://www.myarmoury.com, the forum there is full of arms collectors and martial artists. They also have reviews of swords from many different companies.

Stay away from Windlass Steelcrafts. They are not good makers of swords, and frankly a distorted sword will give you a distorted tool for martial arts.

I have several swords from Museum Replicas and my experience is that you get what you pay for. If you want a wall hanger made from high carbon steel, they are a great bet. If you plan to use them in any martial arts fashion, I would recommend against them. The tangs, although more substantial than a typical wall hanger, are not strong enough to handle strenuous use. I had a CAS Iberia that broke about an inch below the cross guard, something a friend referred to as a torsion break and it can happen even during solo drills when done with intent.

I say go Albion, even if the price tag is a little more painful, you know you are getting a tool that is designed for martial arts and seems to get great reviews in this forum and others. I plan to purchase the Liechtenauer training sword as a birthday present to myself and I believe it is well worth the wait.
