The Columbus Ohio study group is proud to host the messer adept seminar on February 14-15, 2009. The instructor will be ARMA deputy director Jake Norwood. Bring a messer waster or arming sword waster and whatever sparring gear you feel like using. Day 1 will be instruction and day 2 will be more open free play. Cost will be 50$ per person, payable in advance, although that can lower if we get more than enough people to break even. Free lodging (floors and couches) is available upon request. Contact me at krovos@hotmail.com (hopefully well in advance) to register. This event is restricted to ARMA members. It will be held at this fine facility:
Wow, sounds like I need to convince my better half that a trip to Columbus would be fun!!
Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds.
6 Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a twoedged sword in their hand;
7 To execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishments upon the people;
Psalms 149:5 - 7
My understanding is that the adept level is only open to GFS or better. Is the seminar also only open to those members, or can we still attend with the intention of testing for the adept after we've achieved GFS?

OK, got it clarified. If you are an ARMAteer you can attend. You just can't actually get the scholar adept messer certification until you get that scholar adept in longsword first. So, you are most welcome to attend, GFS or not!

You can attend Adept Program training seminars before you get your longsword rating at the Adept Captain's discretion (so basically if Jake says it's OK with him), but you will not be given access to any other adept weapon curriculum or allowed to test in any other weapon until you have successfully tested for Scholar Adept in longsword first. Longsword is our core curriculum (and that of the Masters) that we have done by far the most research and development on, so it's important that we require you to focus on learning our common foundation before letting you branch out and specialize very much. Doesn't mean you're not allowed a little sampler now and then though.

Another point---it was stated in the early discussions on the podcast/etc that adept certification can be very brief and does not require any special seminar like the one we will host; one must merely demonstrate the appropriate skill level at an agreed upon time and place to the Adept Captain of the weapon or three already certified adepts of said weapon.
Is that still the case? If so, then certainly training in messer now and practice over time will likely lead to that eventual certification, perhaps even at the same time event/occasion one earns the basic longsword adept ranking if the right people are present.
We have times and room reservations confirmed for the event now. It is Saturday (2/14/09) from 1pm-9pm and Sunday from 10am-530pm. This event is open to all ARMA members, regardless of certifications (or lack thereof) or the like.
So, just wondering what the attendance count is for the event now, and if anyone has any questions...I will be there, might have a couple spectator guests.
