German translation resources

Postby Jason Taylor » Tue Jan 27, 2009 6:16 pm

I'm looking for some good resources to help me out in doing some of my own translation work with my group. Quite a bit of the old German stuff can be gotten in the original, and I've often found it useful to try to look at the words myself when looking at other translated works (mostly when I was working with literature), so I thought I'd try to take that approach with some of these texts and see what fruit it bore.

I'm looking for something to help me figure out some of the archaisms I'm running into here. My German is decent, so the modern meanings of words are often close enough for me to figure out, but some of them are just stumping me.

Something that would give some help on the 1500s or so would be ideal. I'm not really trying to tackle anything much older than that yet. Some kind of Old/Middle High/Renaissance German dictionary would be the best, but a translation into modern English would be ideal. Modern German would be fine, just a little harder to use. And online and free of course, would rock, but I'm willing to buy a book from Amazon if there is such a one.

If anybody has any ideas, I'd much appreciate the input.

Here's this, a Middle High German primer, which is online and free. However, the format can be a pain to use. The glossary section begins at page 172. Fair warning, much of the specialized vocabulary of German swordsmanship is not found in the glossary.

Oh, and I think you can pick this up from Amazon, too.
