Leg sweep or not?

Postby Tyrone Artur Budzin » Sat May 30, 2009 9:40 pm

This picture is from Paulus Hector Mair's Opus Amplissimum de Arte Athletica plate number 76 of the unarmed section.

I was wondering if this picture depicts a leg sweep? It looks so to me but other opinions will be highly appreciated.

Is there any text to go with the picture?

That's not a complete leg sweep because he has one leg still on the ground for sure, but it appears to be some kind of variation on... the first wrestling? I'm not exactly sure (not too well versed in ringen), but it does look like it's a play on the first or second wrestling involving the use of the leg as a secondary fulcrum for the throw?

This is an outside leg trip, it is commonly used in judo however it will rarely work against someone with a good base, but the reason for using the move is to create an opening and attempt to off balance the opponent. You will see this move executed in most MMA fights and certainly in almost all judo competitions, I hope this insight helps
