There's a really nice explanation here on the ARMA website, complete with pictures:

For descriptions I refer you to the source manuals. They are:

Sheitelhau - breaks Alber
Zwerchhau - breaks all that comes from above
Krumphau - breaks Ox
Schielhau - breaks Pflug

and arguably Zornhau - breaks Zornhau

I agree Sal.

The ARMA article on what the master strikes are and aren't is a tiny bit outdated, though, from what I've heard (especially regarding the "ARMA Krump"), so perhaps some more recent work would be better for him such as "Sigmund Ringeck's Knightly art of the Longsword" available at many online bookstores.

I consider that one of the older books.

The book "Sigmund Ringeck's Knightly art of the Longsword" was published back in 2003, well before the article. In any case, much of the interpretations seen in the book and the article are very outdated, especially the Krump. John Clements' new interpretation of the Krump is completely different from anything in any current book or article.

Is that so? Guess I don't know any recent books, then. Still, it's a good cross-reference.

Speaking of Clements' interpretations, weren't we supposed to get an article on footwork sometime soon?
