To sew a Gambeson

Postby kruesae » Thu Oct 29, 2009 1:51 pm

Greetings from Germany,

I've been learning swordfencing for nearly 2 yr. And since 1yr I'm training for medieval fight shows, I'm not really if its the right term, but I'm sure you understand what I mean - a mixure of freeplay and arranged fighting scenes. I also learned the basics of sewing.

And the project for the next will be a gambeson, not Brigandine. We try act Landsknechte, in the end of the 15th century. But I want to use the Gambeson in our normaly Training with Schwertfeder, Sword and Shield, wrestling and so on. And also in the combination with a chainmail. I'm not sure if should use a Hauberk or Haubergeon, maybe you have some advice for me.

I have idea for my gambeson. I would try to discribe it in english, if it possible to add a picture i will try to make a sketch.

First I think it is best idea not attach the arms in the armpit to increase the flexibility of the arms.
Second a collar opend on the sternum, but with the possibility to close with a overlapping piece of fabric which can attached with 2 or 3 buckles.
Third an additonalthick collar also attached with buckles to protect the neck and the throat.
4th the gambeson should be long enough to cover half of the femoral.
But I'm not sure how to keep the legs flexible. One possibility could be just leave a slash in the front from the bottom up to the hips.

For the exterior material we want to use sailcloth in on inner site linen. The problem ist the filling of gambeson. Their is an interessting discussion in german speaking Forums about tamping in tubes or little pockts or just use many layer quilting them either in rectangles or diamonds. And I'm not sure about the filling materials some prefers horsehair and some army blankets.

I'm not sure about advantages. But I would prefer the method which would made the gambeson not that hot.

Maybe you have some good ideas or referecens for me. And also excuse my some times a bit puzzling english.

Greetings from Rostock

Björn Kruse

Try this:

It's the basic design that I'm going to base the gambeson that I'm planning to make this year on.
