Where can i buy reliable, affordable gauntlets

Postby Sean Gallagher » Tue Dec 29, 2009 12:12 am

So i recently had the tip of my thumb broken clean through the distal tip while i was wearing lacrosse gauntlets via my own failing technique. Obviously getting better would solve that problem and i'd have my thumbs/hands/fingers hit less in general, but the paradox is, if i keep breaking fingers my progress will certainly be slow. So i've decided to invest into better hand protection, which i assume steel gauntlets dominate.

So can someone point me in the direction of gauntlets that will stop my thumbs from breaking that i can get at preferably around 150-160$s.

Kydex, steel, whatever, it doesnt matter as long as it works and doesn't take away all my movement and sword feel.

Thanks,
Sean

I don't know of any steel gauntlets for less than twice that price, but recently I've been protecting a smashed index fingertip on my right hand (fingering a cut and thrust) with a $1.00 zinc sewing thimble from Walmart. The rim got bent pretty quickly, but the tip is very strong structurally and should resist all but the most devastating hits. I've only been trying it a short while, but it's a cheap and easy solution you can try immediately, just wear the thimble inside your lacrosse gloves. I use those too and they've always been sufficient to protect the rest of my knuckles from severe injury, but those fingertip hits hurt every time. A steel thimble would probably be better if you can find it. I haven't found it to reduce my feel for handling the sword yet, but I'm not wearing several at once either. Give that a shot and see if it helps.

Joey do you have any experience with those? do they work well?

Another option i suppose is a set of gloves under my lacrosse gloves that do better to protect my finger tips? or i suppose just modifying some lax gloves would work too. Just trying to get a feel for what is out there.

I've never tried them, but those are the only things know of that fit what you're looking for. I'm tempted to get some because, as a musician, I really can't afford to have my fingers getting injured. I've gotten lucky so far...

I've been tempted by those before, myself, but I'm not fond of the clamshell design. Seems like they would really interfere with any complex grip changes I might need to make.

What I'd really like is some kind of plastic fingered gauntlets; even if they're bulky, the protection and mobility might be worth the trade-off.

Please note that steel gauntlets shouldn't be used with wooden wasters because the wood will get torn up every time it comes in contact with your hands. Also, if you are a member of ARMA note that we boycott Purpleheart Armoury (ask about it in private if necessary, we no longer discuss this on the public forum).
