Ehm, one of the historians cited by Novati is convinced that Fiore descended from non noble family, his argument makes quite sense. It is possible that Lieri actually meant liberti...

Hmmm.. The thing is that none of the historians at that time, in fact until Zanutto in 1907, had access to the text from Morgan/Getty, which seems pretty uncompromising in Fiore describing his family as noble.
I would be grateful if you could find out which historian he was citing. As far as i know the only guy who wrote about Fiore before Novati was Croce, and that was a long time before. Or maybe Bascetta? Hmm, no he was later I think.

Bascetta is from the 1970s. Carlo, what page in Novati? Anyone find Croce?
