Probably not a gambeson, those should be made tough enough to take some abuse, but metal joints, corners and edges vs. T-shirt and sweat pants, historical tunic or other thin material may be a different story. In particular, always check both your blade and your armor for sharp burrs and nicks after hard metal-on-metal contact and keep a file around to knock them down. We had somebody here get a pretty nasty little cut from a nicked blade a few weeks ago.
