Talhoffer Illustrations (slightly OT)

Postby Craig Peters » Wed Jul 09, 2003 5:28 pm

In Talhoffer's 1459 work, Alte Armatur und Ringkunst, from plates 11 recto to 48 verso there are a number of odd devices and machines of war. Most of these items I do not recognize, even though I know a little about siege warfare. Can someone lend some insight as to what they are, and why they appear in the manual? <img src="/forum/images/icons/confused.gif" alt="" />

It is a copy of Belliforties (sp?), a tactics and strategy manual.

Never heard of Belliforties; is it mainly concerned with tactics and strategies for siege warfare and advising generals, or does it contain techniques for different medieval/renaissance hand to hand weaponry too?

It is the most famous medieval manual which deals with siege weapons and tactics. It was widely copied.
