Any blade smiths here?

Postby shane wink » Wed Mar 30, 2011 7:28 am

I have been smithing knives and tools for a few years, I am still an amateur, and have been edging into making longer versions and eventually I want to craft some swords. That is what has drawn me to the longsword and ARMA. A desire to learn to use a tool so that I will better understand how it should be constructed.

So I was wondering if there were any other hobbyist or professional smiths here that could share some insight gained in constructing longsword. I have bee particularly looking into how the pattern welded core was positioned with the steel edges.

I wish I were that good but all I have made thus far are knives, the longest with a 13" blade. It takes time to learn to forge the entire blade and keep it all straight.

I do have a project I am working on that will be a full size weapon but it is only to see how it will turn out.

If I lived near there and did not have any attachments, wife kids grandson career etc, I would jump at the chance. TY for posting it !

Shane

Within the swordsmanship community there are those who are more concerned with how to use them and those who are more concerned with making them, and the swordaphiles who just like them. ARMA is in the category of more concerned with using them…thankfully. Sword Forum International has many blade smiths that frequent it, I would recommend heading over there for the making the swords questions you have.

If you want to learn how to stick it into someone your in the right place ;) :D

I endeavor to do both as I have worked in my shop for many years to be able to pursue both now with dedication.
