I have a two handed danish broad axe, and a hand axe of same style. haven't really owned or played much with a bearded axe however. I find the bottom point very effective in hooking, and in on a cut to a helmet to puncture somewhat before a cut like a can opener...not sure if that was a historic way of doing it but test cuts on light frying pans shows it to work well for me. But I have been puzzled by the beard on some axes. seems it a less effective configuration than the point a broad axe has. Anyone play with one enough to see any advantages or uses for the beard that I'm not getting? Were they sharpened like an edge? that would allow for a chop if you didn't hook quite right, but unless they didn't follow the shape of the head seems they would be dull. any insights would be greatly appreiciated!
