Longsword vs arming sword

Postby Alexis Sicard » Mon Sep 17, 2012 1:32 am

hi, everybody
I am a role playing game creator and i need some information about the arming and the long sword.
On this video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-56RZEN7xgA

we have 2 fighter with a long and an arming sword .
longsword fighter didn't seems to have a advantage.
so longsword is only more effective on armor if i compare with arming sword ?

i talk about 2 fighter of egal skill i know that little differences can be exploited by skilled warriors.

thanks in advance for anwsers, i am sorry if i make mistakes here just tell me what's wrong and i will fix it, have a nice day !

The longswordsman in this video is far too defensive. He's not exploiting his advantage in either reach or power and he's not extending his arms when he strikes. The shortswordsman is being more aggressive and has some good exchanges alternating cuts and thrusts and getting the left hand in to grapple, but both of them at some times look more like they're attacking the swords than each other and the attacks are frequently weak and non-threatening. The lower openings are harder to defend with a short sword against a longer weapon (especially with that lazy shoulder guard), but the longswordsman never takes advantage of it. In fact, the longsword man almost looks intimidated through most of this; the short sword man appears to be clearly more skilled and confident. The footwork on both sides is weak, lacking commitment and energy. Despite a couple of spirited exchanges, this is not a very good example of a longsword vs. arming sword fight.

Like everything that has ever come from AEMMA, what is shown in that video is heinous! There is little to nothing to learn from tha video.

I suggest the following video of ARMA Director John Clements explainging how to use a one handed sidesword against a longsword.

okay thanks i just change my name i hope its correct, thanks again for the link it will be useful :D
edit : ok this was very very useful!
i am not very good in English but i think it was techniques "how to handle one handed sword against longsword"
So the longsword have an advantage for the engagement because of the range and strength of the blow. But after a good parry/dodge and placement the one-hand-sword-guy can take the advantage ?

In general, yes, that is correct. The short sword can seize the advantage by establishing a good bind and moving in to closer range, where he can then use his left hand to interfere with the longsword's defense. It's not an absolute guarantee, however, because there are ways to fight with the longsword at shorter ranges too if needed, and it can be used one-handed in a pinch also.
