A Del Tin question; Krupp CK 55 vs. 50CRV4

Postby Mike West » Sun Oct 12, 2003 8:11 pm

Hello,

It's been at least several years since Del Tin made the change from the Krupp CK55 steel for it's blades to the
Chromium Vanadium (50CRV4) steel.

How would you all compare the two steels? I've heard from folks at Renn. Festivals that the new steel is more for a reanactment type of blade, where swords have to be able to withstand lot's of sword on sword bashing, whereas the old Krupp steel made for a sword better suited for cutting, and fit the bill for a battle worthy sword.

Because of that, I've tried to buy used Del Tin's that were made from the old Krupp steel, but there are swords in their line up that I have never seen used, so I was wondering if the newer swords were o.k.

What do you all think?

The steel Fulvio currently uses works fine for both uses as far as my experience has proven. The heat treatment/tempering process is the real key here and Del Tin blades hold up very well. The only real problem we've experienced is the ocassional "bent tang".

They are very decent swords for the money.

Hi Stew,

How thick are some of these edges?

I don't think any of my DT's are overly thick. My last sword was the DT 2143 which I purchased last year and although it has a thick flattened diamond cross section suitable for plate armour it could still take a decent edge.

Come to think of it, JC did make a comment as to it being heavier than his <img src="http://www.thearma.org/forum/images/icons/confused.gif" alt="" />
