Wisby and New Orleans.

Hi guys.

I have an acquaintance in New Orleans who may be interested in doing/watching some test cutting for part of her physical anthropology thesis which relates to skeletal remains from various medieval battles.

So are there any groups or persons who engage in test cutting and would be willing to let her watch?

Secondly I know there are a few short articles written about the Wisby remains, AFAIK they are mostly summaries of Inglemark and Thordemann, does anyone know of any further studies made of the remains? They don't have to be in English. Does anyone know what has become of the remains?

One of the most thorough treatments is Thordeman's "Armour From the Battle of Wisby".

Some of the remains are on display in the local museum in Visby, some in the Museum of National Antiquities in Stockholm.

The analysis of the skeletons is deeply flawed, as the bones were collected after a grid system, and not as individual skeletons (forensic archaeology wasn't invented in the 1920's). Thus, any conclusions drawn from e.g. the distribution of injuries are shaky at best.

I do not have any suitible period cutting weapons nor do I know how to do proper cutting with swords, but I do live in the New Orleans area and would be willing to help out in any way, including acting as a liason or even putting someone up here at my place for a few days if they were going to be coming through town. How soon does your friend need to participate in these experiments? There may be an ARMA event in or near town in February.

She actually attends Uni in New Orleans so I guess you guys must live relatively close to each other. I'll get in contact with her and see if she wants to contact you.

I'd be glad to help out any way I could. Don't forget as well, Houston is only a four hour drive from New Orleans. With a little bit of advanced planning it seems likely she should be able to co-ordinate something with ARMA members there?
