I enjoyed this gathering very much. I do believe that everyone in this organization is getting better and learning more all the time. The tremendous quality of the knowledge shared among the members of ARMA is truly staggering when we put it together at events like this. I was able to get great refreshers on some things I already knew, found a plethora of new dimensions and perspectives to add to my current knowledge, and took away a lot of things that were brand new, and that I had not yet percieved. I never cease to be impressed with the depth of material that we who belong to ARMA are consistently able to present. Well done, all instructors, and congratulations again to all my fellow new Free-Scholars.

Sounds like a great time.

I am, of course, excessively jealous about it and will harbor resentment towards all of you lucky people who have the luxury to go to a great event like that!

Sounds like it truly was the "meat and potatoes" of what ARMA is about. Dialogue, scholarship, martial arts, and intellectual and practical exchange.

Good job Jeanry. Try to go over all that you learned to keep it from being lost over time. It is hard to retain all the info that floods you in an event like that.

Congrats to the Free Scholar awardees and to the instructors and participants.

Peace,
Tim Sheetz

Thanks Tim,

I remember at one point Sunday John C. asked me what I thought of the event. I told him it was about what I had expected (optomistically!), and I was really happy since I had already learned 7 things. "Just seven?" he asked.

Thing is, I think I only learned 3 things from boot camp and maybe 2 from high school, 3 or 4 from University.

My mind is swimming with the implications of what I have learned, all the new cuts, especially the wonderful universe of possibilities presented by false-edge cuts.

I'm also glad to have Jakes print out on Meyer which I've been studying, and Jay's URL on the knife fighting classes some of the tecnqiunes which I practiced with Marjorie this morning and last night. I'm hoping if I'm able to join ARMA now that I'll get access to further training tools, and be able to continue to retain more of this fascinating legacy of our martial heritage, and ultimately contribute to interpeting it.

First I have to suss out all these freaky german words.

Seriously though, my biggest problem now is I can't get over the urge to talk to everyone around me about swords and fencing, compare notes with them and spar with yardsicks. Those of you in areas with large regular groups are really lucky just for the martial comeradeship.

Eddie, you were the guy who was there every day at 8:00 AM. Thanks for letting me handle your incredible steel weapons, it was an honor.

Marjorie said someone was filming part of the time when Jake and I were sparring. If there are any clips of that available I'd love to be able to see them.

Hi Sean, thanks,

I'm going to make a sword this weekend and I'll photograph the entire process step by step and make it into a little simple web site which I'll post a link to here, like I did a few months back with that latex sword I made.

I already listed the two main "ingredients" (foam and core material) in the "what foam to use" thread here in the ARMA public forum.

Yeah, Tim, you really missed out.

I had a wonderful, wonderful time. The hotel couldn't have been better, I found I loved the city of New Orleans (I didn't think I would), and I got to spar some capable people with largely untested material from Meyer...and it worked. I'm on top of the world right now. I really hope that we get to do this again next year, as it's been *my* highlight of 2004 so far.

"Personally, enduring a light-sensitivity induced migraine by the first afternoon, and then a residual headache on the second day, precluded me from enjoying things as readily as I would have (oddly, drinking 4 Redbulls in 5 hours did not help matters)."

Sounds like you felt they way I usually feel at ARMA events

I certainly regret being unable to attend, but at least Mike Cartier (congrats on your promotion!) lives within a reasonable driving distance... Maybe next time...
