You can heat it over a stove just fine, just keep it on a very low heat, the idea is to melt the wax not to boil it. My family has been doing this for more years than i care to remember (goes hand in hand with the beehives in the back yard). if you are trying to melt a large amount of wax, say enough to fill a 6 quart pot 3/4 of the way full, it should take about 2 hours or so to melt it properly so that there isn't any danger of boiling or burning.
