hmm. yes i had considered the versatility you speak of. i could potentially go from 14th century to norman in just a minute or so.

during class, i'm still one of the fastest runners in my mail and helm, so that it doesn't really slow me down a lot.

it does make my left arm get pretty tired though, holding the shield on guard.

the thing i hate, is when my gambeson is all sweaty it's hard to get the maille off. usualy i just do a hand stand and it falls right off.

Hehe now I have to defend 15th c armour. The cool thing about complete 15th c plate armour, is that a head to toe field harness like mine, is 55 lbs (minus gussets).
It's not versatile for time period, but it's very modular and versatile within its own era. You can mix and match pieces, going in 1/2 armour, complete armour, whatever. My cuirass is a plackart and breastplate combo, joined by leather buckles and straps. If you wanted, you could just wear the plackart, or just the breastplate. You can easily outfit yourself as an infantryman or man-at-arms.

see, this is what i thought. i was pretty sure that a full plate harness would be lighter than plate and maille. being a smaller guy, less weight is definately a good thing.

i think i'd have to go with a german gothic harness, with a sallet. i've already got the gothic bastard sword to match.

Hi Shane,

I will keep you posted on this. When I get some time to finish up the half-finished pig faced bascinet I have in the works. I will let you know what I think and even post pictures. I am in the middle of converting over my old SCA armour to a proper churburg style harness, then I plan to start a 15th century armour of some sort. However, this will take time as armouring is a hobby with me, along with way too many other time consuiming hobbies.

One last thing that all of us overlooked telling you about; When you get a fencing mask,be certain that it is a "three weapon" style. That makes all of the difference in the world when it comes to practicing HES in earnest.

Yeah,

It is also called a 3-weapon mask. It is named this because it is built to be used against all 3 weapon types of sport fencing (foil, epee, & saber), and is much stronger than a standard mask designed for foil only. Good catch on that one Shane.

putting a mesh into the eye slots

Just as long as it can take a good, hard thrust (accidents happen) without becoming disconnected.

I have a three weapon mask that works pretty well... but I'd love to modify it and add throat protection and some head padding into it. I also own a sallet and bevor, I tend to always wear the bevor, folded down it protects the throat and jaw, snapped up it protects to the tip of my nose. However, I need to modify the padding within it-worn fully extended, if I were to take a shot on it the bevor would slam up and bloody, if not break my nose. Alas, I did not consider that this particular bevor was designed to lock onto the upper breastplate on a full harness. Experiment, experiment. The sallet, although offering good protection and intimidation (like sparring isn't sometimes intimidating enough) it has the same terrible narrow field of vision. Something I had never considered until trying out a visored helmet design was that the somewhat stiff movements sometimes seen in some harnessfechten was because of lack of visibility and NOT because of the armour. It was wierd to watch my training buddies each try this sallet out in slow waster engagements and see each one suddenly move in that subtlely awkward way that I attributed to full-plate harness while they are in shorts, t-shirt and sallet!

I think now about the "raise your visor after the initial clash" viewpoint more nowadays. But I'm still trying to use the visor, hoping that there are ways to adapt to it further.

cheers!

How strong should that be? Is 12 kg enough?

12 kg is considered to be the minimum standard for a 3-weapon mask, and will be fine.

hope that helps.

i tried out saftey glasses under my norman helm tonight. it worked pretty great actually.

the helm itself is also pretty great. it's deflected many a waster to the noggin. i'm starting to think it was the best $130 i've spent

I'm glad it worked out.Your eyes are the softest part of your body and simply must be protected in intense training. Some people will give you a hard time about looking "non-period" for wearing safety equipment on occasion but remember that your eyes are more important than their sense of "period correctness"...PC if you will

I am riveting a piece of heavy leather over the top of my fencing mask, thinking that will help absorb head blows...

If you are wanting to do some leather work for your fencing helm, check out this pattern. http://www.armourarchive.org/patterns/leatherhelm_gerhard/

I have seen this done, and it can turn out really nice.
