Thrust countering

Postby Guest » Wed Apr 21, 2004 11:46 am

I fence alot with my friends and most of their moves are thrusts. I only know a couple of counters to thrusts and i need to know more. Can anyone tell me some counters they know?

I asked a similar question a few weeks ago. Check the post "Thrust Grief" for some responses.

I'm a big fan of thrusting into an opponents thrust with opposition. In doing so,I set his point off-line while mine strikes home. It's very efficient in action. Another alternative I prefer is to void and counter-cut to the hands.

So Jake, does this mean you want us to try Krumphau?

I actually never tried it against a thrust. I'll have to experiment on saturday

A krumphau is also known as the crooked strike or the bend strike. It is done much like the movement of a windwhield wiper. It is a great counter to any number of attacks and guards. It is one of the master strikes, and is used to break the guard of ochs. It can be thrown with either the long or the short edge.

Ringeck said " This is how you should aim a krumphaw at the hands: when he attacks you from his right with an ober or unterhau at the opening, leap with your right foot toward his left side and simultaneously strike his hands with your arms crossed, using the tip of your sword. You can also use this if he is in the ochs."

Meyer has this to say about the krumphau

"This strike is described thus: stand in the Wrath Guard with your left foot forward, when your opponent strikes, step with your right foot fully away from his strike and against his left side, strike with the long edge and crossed hands against his strike, or between his pommel and blade, diagonally over his hands, and fully overshoot his arms to lay on the blade, as shown in illustration D by the figures on the upper right hand side. "

It is a wonderful technique.

Can’t argue with anything Jake says. If he recommends krumphau, I’d work on that.

But another technique against the thrust that works quite well is one I first saw JC do and then I saw it again explained on the Ochs longsword video. I’ve tried it a few times myself and it’s pretty sweet.

Here’s what you do. You stand in either right von tag or right pflug. When the opponent thrusts, you wind into a left pflug (with the fingers up). This displaces the enemy’s blade and places you in a position for an immediate counter thrust. This defense also works against cuts (where you can wind either into the pflug or ochs).

Hello all here is my take
Ringeck advises you
To thrust when he thrusts and to strike when he strikes
So absetsen seems to be what uncle sigmud advised.

The absetzen is what jay describe however you do no need to go all the way to the opposite guard the whole movement is a counter thrust. So your thrust will naturally set his thrust aside and hit him.
This works best on attack on the same side you have you guad.
IE he attacks you toward your right and you are in a righ guard.

If he attack you onto the left and you are in a right guard.
You can use the absetsen from the krump (ie taking a schrank ringeck version), I think this bit is repeating what Jack said or using a shiel if he thrust like a buffalo.

When parrying a trust with a scheil or krump-schank, it is better to tranfom the seting aside component in trust. Which will give you shiel a strong taste of hangen.

If you are strike and they are thrusting, they can change through or suck you in the anti-krump counters. (note that I have seen a lot done but well& )

I also like using Fiore's Posta Frontale if the thrust comes in high and then follow up with a cut to the neck or arm .
