54" and 60" wasters

Postby David_Knight » Sun May 16, 2004 8:44 am

Is it reasonable to train for longsword techniques with claymore and greatsword wasters, or were the specific applications of those larger weapons so radically different from the ARMA-standard 48" longsword that the basic guards and strikes do not apply?

David

Yes, train with a great sword just like a long sword. Note that Goliath, like Ringeck, is a comentary on Liechtenauer and great swords are shown in all of the longsword images of Goliath.

Thank you - I had looked at the Goliath dagger plates, but never noticed the greatswords.

How about the true Renaissance two-handers?

Hey David,

Same type of actions with a rennasaince two hander as with a long sword, the one thing that changes is of course the range at which you can strike.

laters.

this is good to hear. i'm so confused by all the bastard sword, great-sword, war-sword, hand and a half sword, long sword. the ARMA definitions page helps some, but doesn't really go into much detail about the difference of use between the types.

i've got a so-called hand and a half sword and a so-called bastard sword. i pretty much train with them in the same way, but i recognize that the bastard sword is more thrustable.

One thing you will notice is that certain techniques require ajustment due to the longer grips. Those slices from the wrist may not be so quick either. I actually enjoy the added range and leverage myself so I ofter train with my great sword which is about 53" I find that I can use either a 46", 48" or 53" sword pretty much the same way with minimal ajustment in technique. I never tried anything longer other than pole arms.
