Silvers Welsh hook

Postby Allen Johnson » Thu May 27, 2004 11:07 pm

In Paradoxes Silver states, "The Welch hook or forest bill, has advantage against all manner of weapons whatsoever." what exactly is this thing? It seems to me to be a pole arm- possibly something close to a Lochaber Axe. Seems I ought to get one seeing as though it the best weapon! <img src="/forum/images/icons/wink.gif" alt="" />

In Dr. Sydney Anglo's book, "The Martial Arts of Renaissance Europe", he indentifies this weapon as basically a scythe or sickle with an extra spike. There is an illustration of two versions of it from the Philadelphia Museum of Art on pg.165. Pretty nasty looking thing really, I would hate to be on the wrong end of it!

I had a tough time finding a pic of one online. Go to this link, don't pay attention to what any of it says, or of the lengths given for the weapons. Scroll down to the section titled "combination weapons". In the pic to the right of that, the weapons labeled as "fauchard fork" are welsh hooks I believe

Yep, those are exactly like the illustration in Dr. Anglo's book.
