First Official ARMA WI Associates Training Day!

Postby Jared L. Cass » Wed Jun 16, 2004 10:55 am

Sunday the 13th marked the first official ARMA Wisconsin training day. Despite some amazingly severe weather in the AM (seriously...first my car was pelted with ping-pong sized hail, then I had to move a blown down tree from the road to continue forward, then I had to pull onto the side of the road for 15 minutes because it was raining and blowing so hard, ect), the day turned out great...lot's of sun and a humid 80degF

In attendance were Wisconsin ARMA members Chris Thies, Aaron Pynenberg and his brother Ryan, Phil Ristow from Minnesotta, Bob Ferdinand and his teenagers (also from Minn.), and ARMA application submited Karen Rose. Including myself...there were ten of us there!

We trained for a good solid (with numerous water breaks of course) 4 1/2-5 hours. Thanks to Phil being much more organized than myself (btw, it was cool having two of us instructing and helping each other instruct...much recomended to any other groups trying to get started) we were able to train in a logical manner.

We started with basic foot work, then onto the basic guards and ways to use them, basic strikes, then the master strikes, followed by the Versetzen. After most everybodys brain was no longer absorbing longsword stuff, we then covered some vague - not master specific...just some of the common themes - of dagger combat. We finished up the day of training with a short lived amount of sparring...breaking three padded weapons in about 10-15 minutes (yep...we were hitting hard and fast)!

A cookout and general socializing followed.

All in all, a great day and something we will definantly plan on doing again! It was also a very nice chance to figure out who lives near whom and therefore know who's nearby and available for more regular training. And of course the regular great things like finally being able to put a face to a name and the comraderie'(sp?) of brothers (and sisters!) in Arms.

Pictures to follow soon:)

Jared and Phil,
You did a super job of leading us through the paces. It was very helpful to see the footwork, guards, and cuts in living color. (I've been trying to work that schielhau all week!)
I especially appreciated the scholarly commentary that accompanied the training. It really brought things to life for me.
A great day of information and sharing of ideas. I learned alot in just a few short hours.
Karen
ps: Jared....I also enjoyed your going barefoot half the day to similate what you've seen in old texts....and to see just how it may have felt . It certainly didn't seem to slow you down any!

Wow. After 5 hours the first go I'm not surprised it took you 3 days to recover enough to type the message.

I'm glad this worked out for y'all. Here in Joisey it's kinda the same, I've met a lot of great people through ARMA. Coming together to beat the snot out of each other seems to have a bonding effect.

You are an encouragement to me.
ciao!

Great! I knew you guys would all get together before too long. It is much more productive and rewarding to train with others of like mind in my experience. I drive an hour each way every sunday to train in VAB with my friends and fellow martial artists because I have found it to be completely worth the effort and the fuel.

Jared & Phil both did an excellent job of instructing.
I had a great time practicing with and meeting everyone.
We'll definately need more padded weapons next time! Mistakes made during partner drills are easily distinguished, but in sparring one's mistakes are not always so evident amidst the flurry of action(s). So a camcorder (w/ viewer) will definately be on the list for our next meet in order to provide painless re-play! In all honesty, the padded weapons didn't hurt a bit. I should know!

Chris

Be warned about video sparring, it really hurts! The camcorder does not lie and has no sympathy but it is a great training tool.
