Fighting multiple opponents

Postby JohnDemick » Thu Jul 29, 2004 9:33 pm

Were their any historical fightbooks that talk about fighting multiple opponents or how to fight in war when there are enemies all around you? Everything i reasearched so far only teaches how to fight one-on-one. Any help would be appreciated. thanks.

Nothing big that I'm aware of, but there are bits and pieces everywhere. Talhoffer and Wallerstein for a couple of published examples including a few techniques vs. multiple opponents.
If you're looking for historical small unit tactics, you won't find them in the fencing books as far as I'm aware.

Watch Braveheart. I think you pretty much had to just go at the closest enemy and hope your buds are watching your back. Lots of moving around helps. We did this a few times at the Provo Study Group- 2 on 1, 3 on 1, and the 1 had to run his booty off to keep from getting surrounded and taken out right away. However, if the opponents are good, and know the right moments to strike (meaning they work together), its pretty tough to beat multiple opponents.

You need to be alert and keep tabs on everything around you. The biggest danger with tons of people around you on a battlefield, is that the line is broken somewhere and someone comes up from behind you and sticks you in the back. There is so much chaos and commotion that you're usually going to assume someone coming up from behind is one of your own guys. <img src="/forum/images/icons/confused.gif" alt="" />
I'm solemnly swear I'm up to no good.
