Yes, the real key here is knowing how best to exploit the strengths and weaknesses of each weapon. Every weapon has certain strengths and certain weaknesses to serve different purposes. To use a more extreme example, a spear has reach, but cannot be employed as usefully in grappling as a dagger. The dagger however has no reach, and must overcome the reach of the spear. It's all checks and balances. No one weapon or weapon combination will neccesarily be superior to another. That's why knights and soldiers carried more than one weapon. <img src="/forum/images/icons/grin.gif" alt="" /> So in the end, it kind of does all come down to skill.
