rebating my Albion sword

Postby William Savage » Thu Mar 02, 2006 11:16 pm

I am the proud owner of an Albion Agincourt sword.

quite a while ago i bent the tip, it was torqued only slightly less then half an inch from the tip. I was going to send it in to albion to be fixed then i realized something;

The tip on the sword had been soo acute it was almost impossible for a WMA practicioner to keep it from distorting. Not only was the tip a danger to anything it pointed at but having such a sharp tip was a danger to the sword itself.

So im going to pound or grind the tip down less than a quarter inch i think.

the blade will be safer, more durrible and if i were going to a medieval battle i wouldnt want the tip so thin anyways. If i ever decide i want the sword sharp again the tip would be at a less acute angle, more to my likings anyways.

Any thoughts?

Yeah,

be careful if you grind it that you don't heat it up and ruin the temper of your blade. Keep the tip cool by keeping a bucket of water next to you and grind for a bit, then dip it in the bucket. The steel should never get so hot that you cannot easily handle it with your bare skin.

hope this helps.

Use a file to keep from over-heating the steel and mask the part of the blade you don't want ground to avoid much chagrin when you accidentally mar the surrounding area with an unfortunate swipe of your tool-hand. A grinder removes metal faster for certain...but it also removes metal faster forever. Go slow and use a steady hand.
