thank-you for the TROS suggestion, however I already know about TROS. That doesn't mean that I am reinventing the wheel just because I want to design a different system. TROS is not to everyone's tastes you know.
In my opinion TROS handles the dynamics of combat realistically, but you do lose the essence of fantasy combat. Every player has his character killed within a year in TROS - and this doesn't happen in a fantasy story.
I on the other hand want to duplicate a fantasy story, but in a way that is real. I don't want to create a video game reality like D&D, but I want to create a living breathing fantasy loosely based on reality - like the Lord of the Rings.
That is why it is important for me to get combat to feel real, even though the results of which are heroic, rather than brutally realistic.
Everyone has their own idea about what makes the best kind of RPG. By designing an RPG specifically to simulate a fantasy novel such as Tolkien's or RE Howard, I don't see how I can go wrong.
