Hey , just got back from Lanzefest in New Glarus with the Albion guys- It was very cool, I will do a full write up with pics as soon as I get them to John first- but this is an interesting and funny thread- I actually named my first metal blunt, "Intangabile" and my second, lighter fightbook sword, "Quicker" because that is how it handles-I am quite fond of both of them, but I think names like "divorce bringer" etc...are funny as sh_t.- Aaron

Funny you should bring up the use of Runes. I have been a student of the runes for quite some time.
In early Germanic and later Nordic swords, runes seemed to be used for either magical purposes, writing the name of the sword, or leaving the mark of it's maker.
In fact their is some description of the use of the runes on swords in Sigrdrifumal:

"Sig(victory) runes thou must know,
if victory thou wilt have,
and on they sword's hilt grave them;
some on the chapes,
some on the guard,
and twice the name of Tiw."

I might engrave some runes in my wasters. I have a wood burning kit <img src="/forum/images/icons/smirk.gif" alt="" /> .

I'll call my wasters things like "Girly sword" and "Son of Girly sword"
Ah, poor girly sword. She met a sad end as Stew's firewood.

Not quite on topic, but you (Jake especially) might find this name generator amusing:

In Hungary, all swords had to have 2 names: an inner and an outer. Knowing the inner name of the weapon gave you power over it; while the outer name was for the world, so everyone knows it. That means, the inner name you don't tell anybody, except when you give your sword away.
My swordnames are (outer <img src="/forum/images/icons/wink.gif" alt="" /> ):
Deus Vult for my longsword
Lux Veritatis for my dagger
La Volta for my.... Rapier, of course <img src="/forum/images/icons/wink.gif" alt="" />

Rainald of Chatillon named his mighty sword "Da Pacem Domine" (funny for somebody who slaughtered hundreds). It was the biggest sword in the crusades, so people came to know him through his sword - it was his trademark item, so to say.
I think, giving names makes sense.

Guys (and gals):

This topic, while interesting, is starting to move into the "whoo whoo" phase of mysticism which has nothing to do with ARMA or with ARMA's purpose.

I was going to suggest keeping it on track, but I am not even certain if keeping it on track will keep it within the bounds of this forum. It is interesting (and on point, IMHO), if we are talking about the historical reasons for naming swords, but everything else seems to be for another, non-ARMA forum. We are not interested in mysticism, religion or anything else in these areas.

So, if there is nothing else to be added re: historical reasons, then I would respectfully suggest wrapping up this thread and moving onto the other voluminous topics that are on point for ARMA discussions.

Thanx

P.S. I did show the "modern" names such as "Exhibit A" and "divorce bringer" to a friend of mine who practices family law here in Houston. She is still laughing.

I was speaking of the use of naming swords, rune engravings, and personal meanings in the historical sense, not the religious or mystic sense.

You know what, I think I should've named this thread "Schwert Namin' "! <img src="/forum/images/icons/grin.gif" alt="" />

As stated previously, this discussion, while interesting, is off-topic.
