Paulus Hector Mair

Postby SzabolcsWaldmann » Tue Nov 22, 2005 6:57 am

Hi there,

I have to tell you, we had hell of an experience on the weekend. We went to Vienna, to the Bibliotheks-Museum and got the actual Paulus Hector Mair codex handed out for research.
It was sooo beautiful.
I knew they were in colour. But what colour! Every page a small painting, wonderfully drawn.

Here's my question. Does anybody know anything about a fullcolour scan of the pages from one of the versions? Everywhere I find only black and white facsimiles, with very poor quality.

And Btw. That thing was gigantic. 300 pages each, it had to be bound in two separate codexes, each about 6 inches thick. The pollaxe and staff weapons part had fold-out pages (one illustration was, this way, almost 35 inches wide), and had teachings not only about ringen, dagger, longsword and pole weapons, but about rapier, Scytches (!), Tresher, Cudgel, some strange toothed Sickle (yikes!), armoured fighting some hundred pages long with lots of exotic weapons and shields.

I feel sorry that these are not online anywhere....

Yeah,

there are some very interesting weapons in Mair's Codexes. They really are an amazing compendium. As for color scans, I believe they are cost prohibitave due to the amount of money the museums want to obtain such scans. I am so jealous that you have got to see and handle the actual books. Amazing stuff.

Right now, it's all about cost to get color copies.

Hello John,

Since our Order's goals are not only teching medieval martial arts, but collection, preservation, transcription and translation of medieval sources for EMA as well, we do invest in buying microfilms and stuff. But Mr. Gamillscheg, the head of the handscript collection in Vienna, can only sell B&W scans.... I only thought, that maybe the two other sources in Germany are colourscanned.
But hey, I made a few good photos. I will cut out the paintings, perspective correct them, and put them online somewhere. I'll let you know

If you pay the Vienna musuem enough money, they will take proper color photos of the manuscript. If I remember correctly, it equates to some ungodly sum that I can't even begin to think about.

Me too- how much are we talking here? Maybe our group should take up a collection- (unless it's some ungodly amount which sounds like it is)-anyone know the amounts we are talking about?

Well, the Speyer codex on CD, in colour, costs 160 dollars.
Anonymus form Vienna, 15$
Hanko Döbringer Microfilm B&W 40 $
Paulus Hector Mair microfilm with all 500 pages, B&W 140 $

Making a colour scan? You have to pay
- for the Rights (must be the biggest amount)
- For a professional photograph, maybe 2 days
- 2days work for the museum
- for data transfer - Microfilm, DVD whatever
- 500 fotos!

If I count in roughly, we are talking about more than 1000 dollars. If you print the pages and make your own 2 books of it you will be at a sum which is worth the name "codex"

But I am making the colour pictures' perspective and photo correction right now, 7 I have ready, around 20 will be all right, the rest unusable dark, or not sharp enough to actually see anything worthly.

But anybody who writes his / her email adress into this topic, will get the pix as soon as I see the mailadress here via email from me
It's public domain

Risto,

Your email boxx seems to full, or you can't get mails this big.

btw., I'll re-send all of them zipped together when I'm done (I just discovered a few more!) but you can count with at least 5 MBs.
