New Type of Waster!!

Postby Aaron Pynenberg » Tue Dec 27, 2005 6:37 pm

Folks,

Eric Winkler, ARMA-Appleton's resident professional cabinet maker, and mad scientist, has developed a very exciting type of waster.

He has milled a piece of semi-translucent type of plastic, into a waster. The piece handles very much like steel in it's ability to flex. It is tough as nails and I highly doubt it will break. The coolest part about it in my view is how it interacts with another of the same type- very similar to how steel feels. They slide, bind and flex on each other as well behaving just like steel does and that "bouncing effect" that wood has, is very minimal with these "plastic" wasters.

To top it off, there seems to be hardly any denting of the material either from impacts of opposing wasters, especially with the plastic on plastic- and Eric tells me the cost relative to wood is significantly less.

Eric has made the cross out of a sanwhich of purpleheart and a very blond, hardwood which looks really sharp. I am very excited by our first tests of these babies-I will post more on them soon, including some pictures- Aaron

Sounds very cool...

Although I'm much more focused on steel these days, wasters will always an importaint tool. Please keep us posted.

I'm looking for a new waster, I wouldn't mind being a guinee pig

Do you think we can get an image of it posted with it's specs?

Yes, no problem I will be doing that soon, I have a crappy flu right now and as soon as I am well, I will summon the energy to get a picture posted.

I will have more details about the type of plastic for you soon as well- Aaron

Well thanks to a little help from a friend I may get this to work-

The material is an industrial grade nylon plastic and it is not "noodly" the flex picture is me just about standing on the thing with a good deal of force- it is very close to the flex in my Heimrick longsword blunt-I love it though as there is no bouncing effect that I get from wood- details soon on ordering one- Aaron

Hey Aaron

Is he "machining" these?

If they hold up sound's like it would be a good tool, how much does it weigh? look's like it would be fairly easy to put a lead counter weight in the pommel/handle for weight/balance if necessary.

Funny you mention that- we are going to try placing several washers in the pommel then capping them with a plastic cap- so the ballance is improved along with the weight- now they are a tad light but not too much diffrent than my NSA waster.

he mills them with CNC machine and several routers- then has a sanding process to clean them up. He is trying a suction jig which will cut his time in half- so still in R&D stage but getting much closer-
