Medieval dagger book by Paladin

Postby Jay Vail » Sun Feb 19, 2006 11:13 am

I thought it would be a good time to let everyone know that Paladin has given me a tentative publication date of July 2006 for my interpretative survey book of Medieval and Renaissance dagger combat. Relying primarily on Fiore, Talhoffer, the Gladiatoria, and Jeffrey Forgeng's Meyer translation, this work is an attempt to survey the primary techniques of both armed and unarmed dagger defense from a variety of sources. In my view, not only is such material of
interest to the student of Western martial arts, but it should be helpful to anyone interested in self-defense matters generally, since, unlike sword material, the techniques presented in the old manuals are as fresh and useful
today as they were 600 years ago.

The book should be titled "Medieval and Renaissance Dagger Combat."

John Clements has contributed a great forward.

Wow. I'm truly looking forward to your book, Jay. I for one think that dagger-material and -presentations are under-represented on todays market. This will mean a shift of balance in a positive direction.

Best,
Joachim

Congrats on the book, Jay! I'll be sure to buy it, as well as work on some of that dagger stuff with ya (whenever our schedules are less busy...). and next time I won't jab you in the face with the rondel! <img src="/forum/images/icons/blush.gif" alt="" />

Very interesting, Jay.

I just got a "Hell's Belle" bowie for an early birthday gift and I believe it works better as a short messer than anything else I have tried. I am looking forwards to trying out the stuff from your book with it.

Martin.

Allow me as well to add my name to the chorus of congragulations. Your book is on my "short list" of titles to purchase this year, so please keep us updated as to when it is published.
