Sparring Gloves/Waster

Postby Guest » Thu Feb 13, 2003 1:47 pm

Hi All,

Chris Dutcher in our study group can testify how much it hurts when your knuckles are smashed by a waster. John Mills can also testify to the pain of a strike to side of the knee as I'm sure all western martial artists can testify too. John's thought on Chris was "I bet he'll never put his hand out there again <img src="/forum/images/icons/shocked.gif" alt="" /> " But still we must train safely.

ARMA emphasis safety in training. Either using historical or modern means of safety equipment the scholar must ensure his/her safety and that of the safety of those you train with or around you.

Looking through our catalogs at work for law enforncement/military I found an excellent and inexpensive sparring and waster use gloves. They are less bulky than hockey gloves and less expensive then those who are attempting to make a "waster glove". There are other items of safety as well.

These are riot gear gloves with kevlar, very, very tough. Very durable. Price $39.99

Now I understand that historically accurate is the way to go in training but not all can afford nice suits of 15th Century German Armor. ARMA NYC spars using modern safety means with live steal such as you will see here: http://www.armanortheast.com/SpartripNYC.htm

Here is some more safety equipment as well: http://www.galls.com/shop/viewProductDetail.jsp?item=TE186

Relatively cheap TKD sparring pads and welding gloves work well also. <img src="/forum/images/icons/wink.gif" alt="" />

I have been using welding gloves for hand protection since my since my childhood. Thus, I turned to them when I joined ARMA. However, a couple of months ago I took a hard hit on my little finger while wearing welding gloves during some sparring with the Houston group. It required a little rolling on the ground. <img src="/forum/images/icons/crazy.gif" alt="" /> Although my finger was not broken it did swell up really big and turn a very dark blue. I intend on getting a pair of those new gloves for sparring and using the welding gloves in yard work. <img src="/forum/images/icons/tongue.gif" alt="" />

Ran,

"It required a little rolling on the ground." TOO FUNNY <img src="/forum/images/icons/tongue.gif" alt="" />

Chris required himself to hop around, jumping up and down around the training area, holding his hand out as if it was on fire, and speaking in foriegn tongue. My professional response, as I am a first aid instructor, was "are you o.k.?" Chris looked at me with eyes that said "die ungrateful human" Did I mention that it was me that smashed his knuckles? I actually excuted a very nice cut, I remember my foot, on passing, touch the ground just as my waster seperated his kuckles. <img src="/forum/images/icons/smirk.gif" alt="" />

Chris is o.k., nothing broken but for some reason he runs away screaming when I hold a waster in my hands.

Too Funny

Train Safe,

Cheers,

Todd

Next time try saying "Awwww. He's just little leaguing!!!" I'll bet you can elicit the "stare of death" ( <img src="/forum/images/icons/mad.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/icons/shocked.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/icons/mad.gif" alt="" /> ), which conveys "As soon as I can stand up straight and breathe, I'm going to rotate your head to its alternate position."

Anyway, I've been wondering about adding a steel plate to the back of any particular type of glove. This would cover the long bones on the back of the hand, which have the greatest length/width ratio. Even some steel rods traveling in the same direction as those bones might spread the force of a sharp blow, and prevent breaking the bones.

The gloves that I improved have heavier leather added and some plastic splints in them.. the kind of splints that soccer shin guards use. added some very very thin foam as well. So far they seem to work well.

I was just wondering if anyone has tryed training with period style gauntlets? I am currently starting to experiment in that area, but need to make a new pair. I am not happy with the pattern of my hour glass gauntlets, they bind my wrist to much. Oh well back to the hammer and anvil. <img src="/forum/images/icons/cool.gif" alt="" />

I currently use a pair of leather gloves that have padding built into the backs of the gloves. They seem to work well, but it still hurts like a *>*)(*)@# when you get hit in the finger.

the modern gear looks nice &amp; protective, but kind of reminds me of abs plastic armour a lot of guys in the SCA use to "lighten up".

Anyone else make armour?

Tim,

Your such a suzy homemaker <img src="/forum/images/icons/smirk.gif" alt="" />

But seriously, I wish I had more time to improve and improvise with my own gear. This stuff seems to be a nice alternative since many of us cannot afford the real thing including myself.

Hi Gary,

You dont need a lot of time... I have been working on the gloves for ove a year... a little bit at a time. TOo bad I have about 5 other projects like that one!

Like my shoes... Gotta get heavier soles put on them and then they'll just great out of doors.

I am not a "Suzy Homemaker"! I am a "Renaissance man"!

Peace,

Tim, John Mills here. I work with Todd. Hope you are safe over there. I am seriously considering trying to get "tabbed" and am beginning to prepare for the AF RIP in May. I'm trying to convince Todd to tryout also. My email at work is millsj@neads.ang.af.mil. I would like to pick your brain a little on this. Todd says it is a nice brain to pick, once you get past the residual "hooah". I look forward to meeting you this summer. And yes, I can attest to the pain when you keep your lead leg out too far......"Gunny"

While being more mobile, do these gloves provide the protection that the hockey gloves do?

Why weren't you using the padded sword JC projected?
I do not use anything else other than the padded swords I build in sparring or practice with others, and so I have no need to wear expensive gloves. The only one reason why I never proposed my padded sword to ARMA is that you already have a good one, than why don't you use it? Sure an home made padded sword is cheaper than a waster and a pair of gloves, not to mention the cost of a broken sparring partner <img src="/forum/images/icons/wink.gif" alt="" /> what if you made a black finger to a piano player?

I'm missing the role of the waster in sword practice, I just do not get the point.

Yes

Sparring swords and waster are two different things. ARMA uses both and as I stated in my first post we where using wasters and we weren't sparring. We were practicing flat parrying and two person drills. The gloves are better than bulky hockey gloves.
