Joachim Meyer Siminar @ MSU

Postby Andy Spalding » Mon Mar 12, 2007 9:17 am

MSU will be hosting an in depth look at the fectbuch of Joachim Meyer in the up coming month of April. It will be a two day event on April 14th and 15th. Right now we are looking at the price being $30 for members and $40 for non members.

Senior Free Scholar Jake Norwood will be leading this event, and once he figures our further details, we will be able to provide more information.

If you are interested in this event, get a hold of me through E-mail (The_Great_Kuno@yahoo.com) or PM me. We will work out payment and i will give you directions (as best i can) to MSU campus.

I will be providing more details...swamped at work right now...

We will cover longsword and staff in some depth. There will be demonstration and sparring with dagger and dussack. You can pre-register to get a fencing mask and a staff--the fencing mask will act as a rental, but the staff you can keep if you like. Prices are like this:

Base:
$30 ARMA
$40 Non-ARMA

Add to that...
+$15 if you need a staff--no loaners will be provided, but you can keep this one. An 8' staff of poplar or better is the minimum (that's what this will provide).

+$5 if you need a fencing mask. Unlike the staff, this is only a rental ;)

So, short version, if you're an ARMA member and you have a fencing mask or equivalent helmet and your own staff it's $30 total, for two days. If you're not an ARMA member and you need all that gear, it's $60.

Pretty good either way.

Also, handouts/study guides will be provided for free and T-shirts will be available for sale. The bulk of proceeds for all of this stuff will go to the MSU Study Group, who's doing all of the legwork for this thing. I'm gonna show up, teach my class, spar, and love it.

Prerequisite for this class is a previous understanding of Meyer OR an NTP 1.0 OR at least a few weeks of ARMA classes. I will *not* be going over ochs, pflug, and zornhau (again). The focus of the longsword portion of this seminar will be the application of Meyer's techniques and principles, not rote practice of his "devices" or his ennumerated cuts and wards. The staff section will be introductory in nature, however. If you don't meet these qualifications and you're interested in coming PM me on this board and I'll see if we can work something out.

Oh, and the date is 14-15 April.

Hey Jake,

If we can get our own poplar staves, what thickness are we looking for?

You absolutely can get your own staves! Get the thickest you can find, usually that's 1.25 inches. 8' is good. 7' is okay. 10' works too, if you're tall.

A poplar staff at Lowes or Home Depot costs about 10-12 dollars before tax.

For everyone planning on attending, we are getting down the the final stretch. I have received payment already from some, awaiting payment from others, and haven't even heard from a few. Just a reminder that it will be happening in about 2 weeks.

Andy,

I gave Jake my money in case I'm not able to make it to his place this Saturday. So just in case he forgets, and I can't make it, remember to pick it up from him.

I would like to thank the MSU study group for organizing this event (and for the hospitality) and especially Jake for what was a very illuminating and instructive seminar on my very favorite master. :D Also, thanks to all who attended for the usual wonderful freeplay and cameraderie.

Thank you for a great seminar and kind hospitality at MSU! This was a nice detailed examination, and I hope more ARMAteers will consider framing more seminars around specific works once in a while so we can all share more insights and materials.

So thank you again Andy and Stephanie for hosting and Jake for the generous instruction. It was a pleasure to meet ever more of the membership and experience new training partners---hope to see you all again soon,
Keith, SA
