Footwork Advice

Postby Charles_Burns » Sat Sep 18, 2010 6:11 am

Does anyone have any advice for a nub wanting to improve his footwork? favorite exercises or anything to be careful of? Even source material or some such? thanks in advance.

A great place to start would certainly be the recent article from ARMA director John Clements:

It clarifies much about footwork within the study of Historical Fencing. Another consideration, often overlooked but of great importance when considering footwork, is footwear. This article therefore is a great supplement to the one above:

I hope this helps!

It's not source material, but this is a drill I've used to improve my own footwork in moving to the sides.

Lay out a length of measuring mateiral. It can be a length of rope, sticks, what have you, but make it fairly long.

Practice making passing and triangle steps to the side along the rope without disturbing it. The idea is to pass over it and switch the feet without kicking the rope around, or to move along it without disturbing it with your heels.

Speed the movements up, going both left and right along it.

Hope this helps.

thanks for advice guys. I had a sparring match with my friend today and was definitely more attentive to the footwork.
