I forgot to compliment with Jake and Tim for their prizes.
On my part I fought more than 10 bouts, half of them with wood in Old Sarum, sabre, backsword and single stick, since those who bouted with me were bloody expert swordsmen, I probably lost most of the bouts and actually brought home a multitude of not painfull black spots, so I think I deserve the degree of junior free punchingball.

I'm kinda late, (been running around a few states recently) but wanted to chime in on how great the event was. Big thanks to Sully for the event, and his mother for giving me (and many others) rides wherever we needed to go. Thanks for all the teachers and lecturers, and for all the members who made it great. Another thanks to all those who I got to chat with and train with. Unfortuately I had to leave a little early and missed bart's Longsword Wallerstien class and having JC give me feedback on my C&T, but I think I"ll make use of that option of sending a 15 minute video to make up for it.

It was really an amzaing event.

The only image I can see is the group photo...

IS this by design, accident, or is my computer being dumb? :-)

If there is any way to get the photos back up I'd like to see them!

Thanks,

Tim

Yeah, the picture directories are being modified as we set up the review article. We'll fix them.

John

The one thing that really stood out to me during the event is not only is ARMA producing the best modern day swordsmen and Western Martial Artists, ARMA is doing so with some of the best men and women of the world's societies. I am extremely proud to be associated with such a fine group of people, such a fine group of swordsmen, and such a fine organization.

By the way, I am not surprise by the picture showing the effect of Patrick test cut on armor. On Friday morning you told me that Patrick really hits hard and had left a large black & blue spot on your leg at another training. Throughout the rest of the event several other people related similar stories about Patrick. I think the armor also has a similar story to tell.

Swordsman by ARMA,
ARMA by choice,
chosen because of martial quality,
martial quality because of the people and the leadership.

I forgot to thank Dan Maragni for his great demonstration on swordsmithing, and his wonderfull slideshow (very enlightening).
And also I would like to thank you, Dan, for carting my butt to and fro The Gathering.

I mentioned this over on another forum. It's certainly worth a mention here. I'm not sure of the exact count, but there were in the neighborhood of 80 fighters/instuctors at this event. Many different areas of the country and, indeed, the world were represented. Many different levels of experience, competence and knowledge were shown by all. Three days of instruction, training, drilling, test cutting, and sparring. With varying levels of intent. With and without pads and/or armor. Using padded weapons, wooden weapons, blunt steel, and bare hands.
And as far as I know, there were no injuries beyond the usual bumps and bruises associated with martial training. That, to me, is an amazing statistic. And, I think it says a lot about ARMA and what the ARMA method of martial scholarship is all about.
Well done, everyone.

The Gathering....

Postby Shane Smith » Fri Jul 18, 2003 12:06 pm

Well, the first annual ARMA Intl. event in New York State has come and gone and I would say I'm left speechless if it weren't for the abundance of words to follow The far-ranging scope and quality of instruction and activities as well as the comraderie embodied by all present was TREMENDOUS! Man I'm proud to be a part of any group that includes you guys! Whether it's Tim and Jake teaching us all a lesson in freeplay publicly,or Stew and I exchanging ideas and blows in our private bouting, the martial mindset and sense of brotherhood was ever-present in my mind...A true gathering of warriors and friends indeed ...

For those of you not there,a brief overview follows;

Fellow ARMA Scholar Bart Walczak flew in and shared his insights into the "Codex Wallerstein" and much else besides. His presentation was of very high quality and his knowledge and scholarship is of staggering quality and breadth.Bart offered many different presentations over the course of the weekend and all were both informative and well done indeed

Our friends from "Ochs", Hans and Alex(honorary ARMA members ), flew in from Europe to share with us their work and insights as pertains to the work of Liechtenauer.Their Instruction in the use of both the longsword and the langen messer was of such high quality that any accolades I could apply would fall short of the mark.My own understanding of Liechtenauers art has grown by a quanum leap. Thanks guys!

Milan Petricevic drove in from Canada to be with us.Rarely have I seen a speaker and Instructor with such an ability to hold an audience's attention while both entertaining and informing them. His insights into the gradual degradation/decline demonstrated in some sport fencing arena's was absolutely startling in it's content.Watching the interplay between him and John at the lecture was a rare and intellectually stimulating treat. His words and instruction were an absolute eye-opener for all who witnessed them by all accounts. What a thought-provoking and insightful guy!

Swordsmith Dan Maragni gave an incredible blade forging demo and the skill he exhibited was inspirational. His lecture/slide show on swords through the ages was fascinating to me.

Swordsmith Daniel Watson of Angel Sword provided both blades and targets for test-cutting at the event. His own blades proved to be good cutters on the grass matts we had on hand.

Matt Larsen and his partner put on an absolutely POWERFUL demonstration consisting of military combatives. The poise and professional manner of these guys was only exceeded by the shear utility and effectiveness of their teaching and technique. Our troops in the field are being well-prepared by Matt and his curriculum in my opinion(which I'm sure is shared by the United States' potential enemies ).

Gene Tausk taught an informative and practical primer on combat break-fall and recovery techniques .Gene did a thorough job of covering the basics of this important, yet often over-looked aspect of the martial arts.Gene also conducted an excellent lecture focused upon the legal concerns facing practicing Swordsmen in modern day.Good stuff!

John Clements was of course, solid gold in his presentations by all accounts as expected. As the quality of his work is well known,I need not say more.

ARMA Virginia Beach put on a brief presentation of historically-accurate armored fighting based on the source texts at their disposal.

Enough about my thoughts...What say YOU my fellow Swordsmen and Scholars?

Thanks, Ran. It's good to be known for something. I was so proud of that dent, I put the picture up as wallpaper on my computer Yes, I'm shameless.

I really enjoyed the event, and it was great to be among people that, when you talk to them about swords, you can actually assume some knowledge, because, not only is ARMA comprised of such good swordsmen, we are also comprised of the most knowledgeable and educated swordsmen. I can't wait 'till the next one!

These are fun vids. I enjoyed the test cutting and I was really impressed by the quality of the sparring in them, and the prize playing was just great.
