Excellent essay John! You bring up a lot of valid and interesting points. I'll pass it along to my girlfriend (she's gonna get started on rapier-training ASAP).

I found the "warrior mindset" part particularly interesting. Although I am aware of the fact that women in general dislike violence, I had never considered that women might actually have to cultivate a martial attitude. I guess that for most guys, it's second nature, and we don't give it a thought.

Hey
John,
really interesting article. It's remarkable how much of the same things I have run into with my own small group. In the last year I got about 3 women and one adolescent girl involved in some sparring. In the old days we never had any girls get on the field but we were much more 'safety - last' in those days.

My most enthusiastic female recruit so far has been my girlfriend Marjorie. I used to get her to just go out and beat on me in the yard so I could practice parries, (and get some exorcise) gradually she started doing some sparring with a few of the younger kids who show up now and then, and then eventually she started sparring with me and some of the other guys on occasion.

I agree wholeheartedly with your suggestion about the ideal blade shape being tapered. I made this short sword specially for Marjorie

http://bellsouthpwp.net/d/e/deodand23/Dagesse.jpg

It's based on a Cinqueda Sword or a so-called Dagesse. The acute point and some fairly heavy counterbalancing make it very comfortable for her with a close to the hilt balance, and she does pretty well with it with a shield.

Later I made a longer cut and thrust sword like a bastard sword for her but I don't have a pic yet.

I notice she was particularly good at thrusting, as you also pointed out. Other girls I've seen sparring seemed to naturally rely on thrusting too.

I also agree about the issue of bruising and the special padding requirements. Once marjorie started doing more sparring I got this thing from Ebay.

It's a either Lacrosse or Hockey shoulder pad... I forget which but they have similar gear for both. It works quite well and you can get these used for about $20. She also has some lacrosse shin guards, and wears gauntlets and a helmet (of course) when fighting.

Here is an amusing clip of Marjorie sparring with my friends 14 year old son Hakon. (Disclaimer! Despite his harrowing shriek of agony, the kid was not hurt in this 'fight', he was back at it 5 seconds later. He's just very loud about the slightest bump an a little whiny!) You can see her using that Cinqueda sword I made.

Here is another of the two of them sparring later on when both had developed their parrying skills a bit more.

Finally here is one of Marjorie taking out some aggression on me (notice the aggressive intent and the nice thrust she does):

The only thing I have found different was the martial spirit issue.. I did run into a lot of initial reluctance to attack, but after some coaxing, once they start attacking the women I have gotten out onto the field seem to be very aggressive indeed, it's like the damn breaks or something. One young girl of about 13, who was very hesitant to try sparring, turned out to be remarkably ferocious.

Interesting disucssion!

My wife Jennifer just joined us in the Columbus Study Group, and she encountered one of the issues John mentioned in the article linked above - that of the wasters being a bit too heavy for her to wield easily.

Do any of you have recommendations on good wasters for female practicioners? I'd like to stick with Wooden Weapons or Hollow Earth, for obvious reasons, but I'll look elsewhere if need be. I'd imagine that between those two companies we can find something, though.

Thanks!

Yeah, several who have handled the New Stirling Arms "perfect waster" found this light and tapered model very comfortable. They are on our link page.

Stewart - there's a very nice balance of power going on between me and my wife. To give her a waster larger than mine would upset that.

Trust me - no one wants that.

Just had practice with Jamie and his spouse. She had that new stirling waster John C. recommended for female fighters which is just a wonderful tool regardless of your plumbing. A center of gravity 6" above the hilt, light as a feather...(must get one). I don't know if this is a factor or not, but it is shaped more as a raised fuller pointed anti-armor blade than as a more flat edged cutting waster I use. One interesting thing is that she was able to make the schiller work far better than her male training partners as defense against the "buffalo" attack. As John C. observed in his essay, she picked up on some of the fine finesse stuff to make things work rather than my mistaken tendency to use too much force to make techniques work. The other observation was that having more mass to the chest required her to work with more extended arms.

Dude, that's my wife you're talking about!

Seriously, I am entirely in agreement with Jaron... Jenn has taken to hiding the New Stirling waster from me so that I don't take it.

I'm not sure it's any lighter than our wasters. In fact, Jenn said she thought hers was heavier than Jaron's Purple Heart model. But the real difference is the weight distribution. The balance on the New Stirling model is so good that you almost don't feel like you're wielding anything... all the techniques just flow nicely. I am definitely going to look at this model (or a longer one) for my next waster (after my "baseball bat" WoodenWeapons.com model breaks).

Where can one acquire this sterling waster?
